i-Docs: Documentary in the 21st Century
Please note: This event took place in April 2017
In the last decade something remarkable has been happening within documentary. A growing body of interactive work has emerged which reinvents the genre – transforming it from something you watch to an experience you take part in. Accessed on laptop, mobile phone, or through a VR headset, a generation of interactive documentaries bring the audience up close with the worlds they depict, and give tangible form to the curiosity, thoughts and feelings that those worlds provoke. These works bring new dimensions to documentary’s project of reflecting and critiquing our shared world.
To mark the launch of i-Docs - the evolving practices of interactive documentary (Wallflower Press 2017) – two of the collection’s editors – Judith Aston and Mandy Rose of UWE Bristol’s Digital Cultures Research Centre - will be joined by Alexandre Brachet (Upian) – the award-winning interactive documentary producer of projects including Do Not Track, Alma, & Gaza-Sderot – and Professor William Uricchio – Principal Investigator of MIT’s Open Documentary Lab. The panellists will show extracts from notable works, and discuss how they bring new approaches to urgent contemporary themes. UWE Bristol’s Professor Jon Dovey will moderate.
i-Docs - the evolving practices of interactive documentary is available through Columbia University Press from April 5.
Presented by i-Docs/Digital Cultures Research Centre at UWE Bristol.
