A traditional rite of passage ritual forms the backdrop for this powerful exploration of masculinity and unspoken queer desire, set amid South Africa’s XHOSA culture.
Every year, the tribe’s teenage boys are brought to the remote mountains to participate in an ancient coming-of-age circumcision ritual. Factory worker Xolani is tasked with caring for Kwanda, a city boy from Johannesburg. But as the days pass, Kwanda begins to notice Xolani’s growing relationship with fellow elder Vija. So commences a dangerous dance with each other and their own desires, whilst all the while the threat of exposure elevates the tension between them to breaking point…
A tough and complex tale of closeted sexuality, this is a brilliantly suspenseful and thoughtful study of what happens when ancient beliefs and modern life come into conflict.
Presented in partnership with Come The Revolution, Queer Vision and Afrika Eye.
