Object Memories
Lunchtime Talks
Please note: This event took place in May 2019
For this talk we are joined by Matthew Rosier the co-creator the Playable City commissioned, Shadowing. Matthew will be discussing his work with augmented reality and it's potential for the future.
How can objects, surfaces and spaces be augmented to reveal their memories, to conjure alternate-realities? What is the potential of such augmentations to create new forms of spatial experience, whether social, education, sensorial, and how do they reveal and enhance our instinctive interest in the lives and presence of others? Since creating the Playable City commissioned Shadowing with Jonathan Chomko in 2014, it’s these questions Matthew has explored through his work.
Where once the walls of Renaissance churches were augmented with painted portals into past, future and alternate realities, to offer the public a glimpse, an encounter with these worlds; today we have the ability to imbue objects and surfaces with movement, light, sound, sensation, using easily accessible digital technologies, offering artists and designers the ability to transform the sensorial experience inanimate material. To give objects and spaces life, even a memory.
In this talk Matthew will draw on experiences from his own work, the work of others, and historic examples to explore how inanimate objects, surfaces and spaces are augmented to transform their experience, and what such transformations can reveal to us about a place, each other and a moment in time.
